Perhaps that is a bit of a false trichotomy. Can one “win” and “lose” at the same time? Indeed. It’s easy. You can play a good game, play your best, learn, enjoy yourself, earn the respect of your opponents, improve your fitness and still end up with a lower score. You just “won” even though you “lost.”
You can also be obnoxious, anxious, angry, cheat, lie about your ability level and end up with a higher score…and still lose.
